The Continued Health of Your Lawn Depends On Proper Watering Practices

Proper Lawn Watering Practices
A healthy lawn is definitely a satisfying site for most people as they walk out their front door or into their backyard. The lush green appearance and crisp cut edges are always treasured by any lover of the outdoors. Lawns, however, are often misunderstood in regard to the amount of water they truly need. Water too much and the soil becomes saturated, actually making it harder for roots to drink. If you water too little, it doesn’t reach the roots at all and your lawn will suffer.

There are many conflicting opinions regarding your yard's moisture needs. A lot of homeowners will water their grass to the point of over-saturation, while others will rarely water their grass allowing the rain to be the only source of water. During an average season, grass will usually need about an inch of water on a weekly basis to keep up the fresh green coloring as well as continued growing capabilities.

The Professionals at Pine Brook Landscaping Have Put Together This Handy Guide:

  • CREATE A GAME PLAN - Set a plan in place before every season to determine how often, if at all, you are going to water your lawn. Then adhered to this plan at all times because if you go from watering consistently to never watering and back again, you will be affecting the lawn’s abilities to absorb nutrients. Without this ability, the grass will have nothing to feed on and will eventually die off.
  • START TO WATER - If your lawn doesn’t get water naturally from rainfall, it will need a little help. The first sign of brown blades in your lawn as well as lingering shoe indentations will be telltale signs that watering should begin. These signs usually indicate that the lawn is stressed and will eagerly absorb anything to effectively revive itself.
  • DO NOT OVER DO IT - You might think you’re doing your lawn a favor by giving it plenty of water, but you can easily drown your lawn. A good rule of thumb is to assume your lawn needs about an inch of water a week. Give grass a half of an inch of water in the morning, twice a week. You can set out an empty container to collect and measure the watering to be sure of the amounts.
  • THE EARLY BIRD - It is most effective to water your lawn in the earliest hours of the morning. The heat has not officially hit nor have the kids or pets decided to live out their adventures in the backyard as of yet. This early morning drink of water will allow for the lawn to absorb as much water and nutrients as possible before the day’s activity truly begins.
  • SPREAD THE WEALTH - It is essential that the entire lawn gets the same amount of water on a consistent basis. Make sure that the grass is completely soaked through down into the soil and the roots. A sprinkler will allow for a natural spreading of water to all parts of the lawn for equal amounts of time. Using a hose with a spray attachment is not the best of ideas because it tends to focus on one area at a time.
  • TOO MUCH TO DRINK – During premium lawn growing season, some homeowners find over-watering to be a worry. An over saturated lawn will create an environment more appealing to bugs as well as inviting weeds and crab grass to make unpleasant appearance. This will lead to extra lawn maintenance in the long run.
  • LET NATURE TAKE CARE OF IT – When possible, rainfall is the best source of water for lawns. If a heavy rainfall just happened the night before, a morning watering is not necessary. Always let nature assist you in your mission to achieve the most impressive grass possible.
