At-Home Family Quarantine Idea - Eradicate Spotted Lanternfly Eggs Before They Hatch!

A Fun, Useful Outdoor Activity for the Family This Spring
While we’re all confined at home due to the COVID-19 quarantine, take the family outside to search for and destroy Spotted Lanternfly eggs! This April and May, walk around your property to check for egg masses on trees, cement blocks, rocks and any other hard surface. If you find egg masses, you can scrape them off using a plastic card or putty knife. Scrape them into a bag or container and spray with rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer. Egg masses can also be smashed or burned. Remember that some eggs might be laid at the tops of trees and may not be reachable.
Spotted Lanternfly (SLF), Lycorma delicatula, is a beautiful pest but don’t let looks fool you. It is destructive, dirty and prolific. They are an invasive planthopper native to Asia. It’s important for homeowners to keep an eye out for infestations on their property. It feeds on a wide variety of trees and plants and is capable of causing serious damage to its host, including oozing sap from the trees, wilting, leaf curling, and tree dieback. In addition to plant/tree damage, they excrete a sour smelling, sugary substance that encourages the growth of black sooty mold which can cover leaf surfaces and stunt growth.
If you think you have Spotted Lanternfly, do not panic!
Spotted Lanternfly does not bite or sting but be aware that they are very mobile and management actions must be continuous to keep them controlled. Penn State Extension has an informative video on how to identify and kill spotted lanternfly egg masses on trees:
Help Stop the Spread of Spotted Lanternfly
The Spotted Lanternfly is a prominent insect in many landscapes right now. Populations of the SLF have been confirmed in Philadelphia, Bucks, Montgomery, Delaware, Lehigh, and surrounding counties. The experts at PINE BROOK LANDSCAPING can help you with any aspect of SLF control, including identification, monitoring and removal. PINE BROOK is a full-service
general landscaping,
hardscaping and
lawn care company that has been proudly providing
design, installation and
maintenance
for all of your outdoor home improvements since 1988.
So if you live in one of these hotspots, take the family outside to search and destroy Spotted Lanternfly egg cases. Since the adults are flying insects and will fly in from surrounding areas, we will not be able to eradicate them all. But we can all work together to successfully minimize the number of adults that will occur later in the season. Be sure to get them all before they hatch!
